About Devyani
My Story
I was born in the cultural capital of India, ‘The City Of Joy – Kolkata’. Partly raised in Jamshedpur and started my schooling from the renowned convent – Carmel Junior College. Eventually in the year 2003, I moved back to Kolkata and resumed schooling from a private school.
As a child, I was fond of dancing, I would keenly participate in elocutions and debates too. On some days, I used to dream of being a painter, some days I wanted to be a fashion model. Often, I would also dream of being a restaurateur or to own an exquisite floral boutique but one thing that never changed with time was my love for writing. I would fanatically write about anything and everything with all the muse in my head.
A lot of people have helped me and inspired me. Some knowingly and some unknowingly.
My better-half has been my rock since the day we met, his immense patience has lifted me up and again, all the time. My best friend, in a different city but close to my heart. Forever and always, my elder sister who has filtered my heart and mind just like my mother would have.
This website is a passionate project for me and I want to connect to people in order to discover myself more as an author, a mother, a woman and a human being.
Personal Life
My mother has always been the sun of my universe. Even the tiniest of my achievements are because of her.
While I pat my shoulder gently for the little achievements I have accomplished, I dedicate a few words in memory of my mother. After being diagnosed with cancer, she started writing. She did not have a laptop or a fancy notebook. Rather, just a pen and an old notebook.
She used to write in Bengali. A language I couldn’t even read properly. She would often recite a few lines to me from her notepad. I guess because she felt left-out in a way, maybe because of the language barriers. I used to write small poems back then but in English only. My mother worked hard to teach me to read and write Bengali. She wanted to be an author, she wanted to share her journey as a cancer-survivor. Little did she know that she wouldn’t survive cancer after all. Her writings were lost just like her physical form. Her suffering turned into my trauma & I stopped writing for a very long time.
During the PTM, my teachers would tell my mother, “Devyani is a story teller. She has a new story every day for not completing her homework. She is a versatile and talented girl but she procrastinates a lot.” And after every PTM, my mother would cry because she felt that as a mother, she couldn’t help me through this because of her illness.
I know the I talk about my mom endlessly even now waiting for that woman to come back. They dressed her up so beautifully that day when she departed. In a red-green banarasi saree. With sindoor and garlands all over her. My mother was incredibly beautiful. I hate myself for saying this but tears made her look more beautiful. I can’t tell her that anymore. My only intention to share this is – please realise real love. So this is the foundation of vocabulary in my life and it was because of my mother.
